Armadale Young Writers' Awards 2020

This creative writing (prose only) competition is open to students who reside or attend school in the City of Armadale in years 3 to 12. The categories are:

Years           11 & 12

You could win some fantastic prizes. The Prizes for each category are 1st Prize $200, 2nd Prize $150, 3rd prize $100 - plus all finalists receive a trophy, certificate and a copy of the anthology containing all place-getting entries. An overall winner chosen from all the place-getters receives a bonus $50 book voucher.

The Armadale Young Writers’ Award will open and accept online entries only from 1 – 30 June 2020. Entries received before or after these dates will not be considered.

Writing Tips – Questions to consider        

  • Choose your font and size carefully. Is it readable?
  • Does my short story adhere to the correct structure of a short story?
  • Am I using paragraphs, and am I using them properly?
  • Have I edited, drafted and re-drafted to ensure my story is the best example of what I am capable of as a writer?

Conditions of Entry

  1. All entrants must either reside or attend school within the City of Armadale Perth Western Australia.
  2. Students must be in school years 3 to 12.
  3. Entries must be prose. No poetry, scripts, graphic novels, or illustrations.
  4. Entries must be the original work of the entrant, and should not be edited by another person.
  5. Ideas should be original and not copied from movies, television or books.
  6. The word limit is 2000 words or less.
  7. Entries should be typed or written in MS Word.
  8. One entry per person only. No joint entries.
  9. Names should not appear on entry pages (for judging purposes), only on the entry form which must accompany each entry.
  10. Quality of writing – to be grammatically correct and free of spelling errors.
  11. The judges’ decision will be final.
  12. The City of Armadale reserves the right not to present an award.
