Birtwistle Local Studies Library is a comprehensive source of information and photographs relating to the district's history.
The library is named after eminent journalist Ivor Treharne Birtwistle (1892 – 1976), editor of The Western Mail newspaper and a founding member of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society (1926).
Mr Birtwistle was an Armadale-Kelmscott Shire Councillor from 1964 to 1969 and was instrumental in forming our local branch of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society.
His strong commitment to our district’s heritage led to a decade-long campaign to build History House Museum which opened on Anzac Day 1976. Mr Birtwistle died less than two months later on 15 June 1976, aged 84. His personal collection of papers, books and ephemera were donated to History House Museum following his death and this formed the core of the Local Studies collection.
